Ahsoka Tano is one of my favorite Star Wars characters who has not made an appearance in the big-screen movies. I wanted to try my hand at a minimalist vector style, so I decided to make a piece of fan art that showcased her unique character design.
As with all fan art, I started by researching images of the character online to nail down details of the costume, colors, body shape, etc. Ahsoka has two versions of her character: an adolescent version featured in the Clone Wars cartoon and an adult version featured in Star Wars: Rebels. I chose to focus on the adult version.
I started searching for a pose that captured the character's athletic energy from the cartoons. I had the idea of the lightsabers converging at a right angle from the start, but I wanted to try other poses in case I discovered something better. In the end, I stuck with my original idea.
One of my favorite things about working on my Wacom Cintique is being able to put my reference images directly behind my drawing surface. In this image, I was trying to capture the details of the lightsaber hilts in vectors.
Originally I was trying to create a very simple vector image that featured the character design in a minimalist 2D style. When I saw the results, it did not feel right. I added lighting effects and the drama of the scene instantly increased. The results were much more the feeling I was looking for.
I added a paper texture to give the picture more of a gritty feeling. The mountains in the background are pointed to resemble old sci-fi planets, but they also end up adding to the drama as she is leaping toward a dangerous, jagged landscape--and whoever her unseen enemy happens to be.
