FAN ART
My fan art is art I technically cannot sell for copyright reasons. I enjoy creating it, though, and it helps me practice my skills for other jobs down the line.
General Anime Fan Art
From the movie Your Name. Such a great anime if you haven’t watched it. Amazing writing and incredible art.
This is such a great drama anime I had to make some fan-art. Discovered I really have a habit of leaning into back-lighting when I made this one.
Spy x Family
The original of this image was drawn during the Drawtober challenge in 2022. It was a much simpler image as I only had one night to work on it. I found a speedpaint online that used a style I have been fascinated with recently, so I slowed it down to 25% speed and painstakingly tried to follow the artist’s process to see how he did it. I then applied the style to this picture. I really enjoyed the results, but it took me many, many hours.
I started drawing this Anya piece to play with coloring in this style that is popular in Japanese anime art, but as a fan of the show, I had to make the set of all three. I drew Yor second and saw the theme of some pink colors, so for Loid, I saw an opportunity to tie him into the group with the pink on the ball gun he has in one of the episodes.
Neon Genesis Evangelion
A friend introduced me to Neon Genesis Evangelion during the pandemic, and like a lot of anime fans, I became obsessed with it. Not sure what it is, but this weird, weird anime defies logical conventions so much you can’t help but be drawn in to trying to understand it. Here’s my takes on the main pilots from the original series.
This one was a bit of a coloring experiment to see what I could with lighting a blue character in red. It’s more complicated than it looks.
Asuka’s Eva Unit 02 is a little stylized in this one as I was having a hard time finding a profile image to draw from. I came across an interpretation similar to this online, and I liked the exaggerated chin piece. So I made my mine that way, as well. Asuka always makes me happy too look at in this one, too. Her confidence here betrays the dark insecurity and depression she suffers in the actual show.
The most annoying and whiniest character of the bunch, this image portrays shinji in a rare moment of assertiveness. I really liked how the Unit 01 came out in the background of this one.
This image actually came from a sweet story in the Evangelion Rebuild movies. She’s actually a clone of the original Rei trying to figure out her place in the world, and I just really liked the story. So I did this image from a screen shot in the movie, Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon A Time.
Avatar: The Last Airbender
I recently binged all of Avatar: The Last Airbender on Netflix. As soon as I saw Suki’s Kyoshi Warrior outfit design, I knew I had to draw it. After that, I got on a roll and kept drawing.
Toph is perhaps one of my favorite characters of all time. She is a 12-year-old blind girl who also happens to be the greatest Earth Bender in the world of Avatar. She proves time and again her seemingly vulnerable character is actually quite well protected by a tough exterior and a sharp sense of humor. These qualities combined with a few rare glimpses at her softer interior make her inevitably charming.
Without spoiling too much here, it is generally agreed among many Avatar fans that Hama is one of the most terrifying characters they have ever seen. I went for a harder edge cell-shading look to try to reflect the moment in the show, and I somehow ended up with an image I could imagine seeing on the cover of Heavy Metal magazine.
Star Wars
This was a digital painting I based on the process used by the popular Chinese artist, WLOP. I wanted to really play with the contrast between the sunlight and the varying sources of ambient light.
This was an Inktober piece based on a picture from the Mandalorian tv show. I colored it for fun and liked the results. Her braid is definitely showing my anime influences.
One of my favorite Star Wars characters and character designs. See “Process” for more on this one.
Deco Vader was my first attempt at doing deco-style Star Wars artwork. The symbolism that emerged from the style was unintentional, but I like the way the Death Star background is reminiscent of religious iconography from many different cultures.
This came from another Inktober list. The character comes from the Star Wars Visions series which were all stories made by Japanese animation studios.
This was a fun piece based on a Gil Elvgren pin-up painting. I was playing around with trying to digitally get a look that would imitate his original painting style.
Musicians
A lifelong Prince fan, this piece was actually a commission (more of a trade) for a concert ticket. (The ticket was for a music festival, not a Prince show. Although I was lucky enough to see Prince live once. Am I still talking about that? I digress.)
A tribute to another one of my favorite musicians. (Did I mention I got to see him live, also? Yep. With Nine Inch Nails. Am I driving business away with these comments?)
